One Door Closes, Another Opens (Movie Review)

"True love is music for our soul."
-A Song from the Heart, 1999

Love is when you hate each other and yet you feel deep down inside that you're starting to like that certain someone. This is what Marianne, a blind music teacher, felt for Gregory in the middle of them having to meet and get to know each other. I saw this film accidentally but probably, by chance. And I completely fell in love with the flow of the story. Truly worth watching.

Marianne, when she was a kid, experienced an accident with her parents that caused her to be blind and her parents to die. Then, the story fast forwards to the present time wherein Marianne is teaching one of her student in her house. They were playing the cello. After a little while, the scenario was straight and up to the part where Marianne teaches a music class and made them take off their shoes to go outside and play in perfect harmony there. Because, as one student previously said in the music room, their equipment were so old that it couldn't hold on any more of their instruments and/or music sheets. But Marianne said to them that you don't need new equipment. All you need is inspiration and the ability to play the instrument with passion.

As their class ends, Marianne gets approached by her mentor saying that a certain famous 'Gregory [_insert last name here_]' will be coming to the school in preparation for his new album that will partly be played by Marianne's music class. The next day, Marianne gets introduced to Gregory and they instantly hated/disliked each other because Gregory had poor taste in music and had absolutely no sense of direction when it comes to making symphony and the fact that Marianne would correct and question Gregory's 'genius'. As time goes by, Gregory then realizes that Marianne was right all along and that he revised the poor version of his composition and made it harmonic and melodic. Sooner or later, they spend more time with each other and understand each other's experiences unto why their life is like that as of now. Meanwhile, Marianne's best friend, Oliver, lives in their shadow into being their support in the background together with his daughter, Tina. Not so long enough, Gregory discovers that Marianne was supposed to have a check-up with her cornea so that it could get transplanted. So they made an appointment for it to be possible. Gregory and Marianne, then, talks about this matter and what will happen if the bandages from Marianne's eyes will be taken off and if she will be able to see. Gregory, at that point, promises that when Marianne gains sight again, the one she loves will be the first person she will see which was meant to say that it was Gregory.

During the actual operation and the waiting before the bandages were taken off, Gregory had bad news for Marianne. He had to go on tour for the recording they had done with Marianne's music class. So, he wasn't going to be there when Marianne's bandages were going to be taken off. At the time the bandages were going to be taken off, Gregory was not there. Though the first person she did see in the hospital room was Oliver.

After a few months or so, Marianne had regained her eyesight and, for one night, became a concert cellist in front of loads of people. But after that, when Gregory asked if she wanted to join on tour with him, she declined because she said that her true place was to educate and inspire the students in her music class. So, in the end, Gregory left for the tour and Marianne ended up with Oliver.

They always said: "If you love someone, set him free." and that's probably what came to Marianne's mind when she let go of Gregory. Well, it just goes to show that if one door closes, another opens. There will always be plenty of opportunities awaiting if you have failed or finished the one opportunity that first opened for you.
